A Sinn Fein Teachtaí Dála (TD) has come under fire for ordering €50,000 worth of printer ink cartridges in just two years through his Dail office.

Aengus O Snodaigh is accused of going through over 400 toner cartridges at the taxpayer's expense over the course of 2007 and 2008.

He claims that the cartridges were used to print leaflets for his constituency.

However, the Dublin South Central TD has protested his innocence, claiming that he would never have run up such an excessive bill if he had known how much it was costing the public purse.

Mr O Snodaigh, described by colleagues as a prolific leafleteer, said: "I'm no freeloader. Part of my job as a public representative is to ensure that the public who elected me are informed about what's going on in the constituency."

There should have been a system in place according to Mr O Snodaigh in order to stop him racking up such a bill.
