Enthusiasts of products emanating from Hewlett Packard (HP), including printers and printer ink, will be happy to hear the firm has reached an amicable settlement agreement in a dispute regarding the patenting of ink cartridges.

There were some issues with Hong Kong-based Print-Rite Holdings Ltd, but as per the settlement Print-Rite acknowledges that HP patents are valid and in effect.

The firm agreed to withdraw the products involved in the dispute from the United States and other countries having corresponding patent filings.

Stephen Nigro, senior vice president, Inkjet and Web Services Business, Imaging and Printing Group, HP, said: "We are very satisfied with this amicable settlement. We are committed to protect our investments in intellectual property and the settlement is a demonstration of this."

The suggestion had been that Print-Rite and other firms had been selling ink cartridges that were extremely similar to those produced by HP, and were allegedly in breach of patents held by HP.
