The worldwide colour laser multifunction peripherals (MFPs) sector showed six per cent growth during the first quarter of 2009, it has emerged.

According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker, the overall MFP market performed better than the single function sector due to devices moving towards multifunction capabilities.

The colour laser MFP market was the only segment that showed growth during the period and a total of 632,000 units were shipped.

It was found the inkjet market declined by 15 per cent compared to last year, the monochrome laser market 23 per cent and the colour laser segment 15 per cent.

One spokesperson for the pollsters said it is expected that vendors will "employ several strategies" to steer them though the economic downturn.

Vendors will "focus on offering cost-cutting and/or productivity enhancements to customer’s existing document infrastructure as well as driving managed print services".
