Small business owners may be interested to hear that Lexmark, the printer ink firm, has revealed results of a survey which identified popular printing problems facing small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs).

Number one with a bullet was the "costs of consumables". Small businesses reported that buying expensive printer ink can often cause headaches.

Second in the survey was the cost of print media, with SMBs complaining about the increasing cost of paper, but the firm recommends using two-sided printing or eco modes on printers to try and work around this.

Paper jams were the number three concern for SMBs but the firm said that these are easily preventable and should not be a major concern.

In a statement on the number four concern - maximising ink and toner use - the firm said: "Your device will likely start giving you signals that your ink or toner is running low in advance of it needing replacement.

"As the ink or toner runs low, your quality may start to diminish but may be sufficient for draft or proofing of jobs. Judge the printer ink quality by reviewing the printout carefully, in conjunction with the signals the printer is giving you."
