A new printer from Canon does not necessarily need a PC as it has technology to enable digital cameras, camcorders and mobile phones to be directly connected.

This feature was one highlighted in a review by IT Pro Portal, which gave PIXMA iP4600 the once-over.

The machine is a colour duplex inkjet model that uses cartridges from a separate dye-based black printer ink to give a "high quality" finish.

It includes "a range of practical functions" to make images exciting, the website said.

Other gadgets include an Auto Photo Fix function, which is said to correct red-eye.

There is also a feature to make double-sided printing easier, which saves on paper and gives a professional result, IT Pro Portal added.

Canon recently noted its "gallery-quality" images produced by the PIXMA Pro9500 Mark II - ink cartridges for which may be available online.

According to the manufacturer, the machine provides good colour control as well as "striking" black and white prints.
