Digital printing boosts book industry
Digital printing has helped to boost the book industry, according to a new study.
Ricoh's white paper, entitled The Evolution of the Book Industry and reported by PrintCAN, found that the book industry has endured a number of disruptions since the 1980s, such as the rise of mass retailers and the mainstream growth of the internet. It found that digital printing has made shorter runs possible, meaning book printers can supply at levels matching current demand.
"The sentiment issue, related to the physical attributes of books, resonates strongly with consumers, lending credence to the projection that printed books will not disappear during our lifetimes. Printed books often express who we are, what we believe and what we like," PrintCAN reported Ricoh as saying. The manufacturer also admitted that college students still prefer textbooks over e-books, noting there are multiple distractions with digital devices that could have an impact on productivity across workforces.
