Xerox has teamed up with an imaging supplies firm to offer its US customers a simplified toner cartridge and supplies scheme similar to the European Eco Box programme. Close the Loop will collect toner cartridges and other consumables from customers, managing the recycling on behalf of Xerox with its patented separation process.

Customers prepare their items for recycling by placing them in a collection box. When it is full, they can print a distribution label, free of charge, and send it off to Close the Loop. The scheme is part of Xerox's Green World alliance programme, launched over ten years ago.

"During the past 12 years, our collaboration with customers has kept more than 143 million pounds of cartridges, bottles, and waste toner out of landfills," said Patricia Calkins, vice president of sustainability, environment, health and safety. "As we continue to make it easier for customers to participate in our remanufacturing, reuse and recycling efforts, we get closer and closer to our ultimate goal of zero waste," she added.

The firm recently released two new solid ink printers, the ColorQube 8570 and the ColorQube 8870.
