Review of Epson Stylus Photo 1400 Printer I’m a keen amateur photographer. I ran a low resolution digital camera for about six years, but all my good stuff went onto film. I made the change from film SLR to a digital SLR last year, but have always used retail printing to do justice to my images. I finally took the plunge after reading the reviews of the 1400, and found that I’m a much better photographer than I thought. The quality of the images is really everything you would hope for from a top quality “amateur” printer.
The Epson 1400 has rich, but nicely balanced colours, plenty of contrast and genuine photo quality, doing justice to any image you throw at it. Of course, if you throw a low-res image at it, you’ll see every pixel, so you need to ensure that your images are up to scratch. The beauty of it is that you can play about with smaller, cheaper images and when you feel you’ve got exactly the image you want you can crank it right up to A3+. If you do hack around at an image with Photoshop, the results on the 1400 are very quickly visible. Even at the highest quality, the speed is exactly as it said on the box. I run VISTA (quite happily), and found installation to be as simple as the 1,2,3 guide on the leaflet. It’s running on a USB hub shared with a scanner, webcam, and an HP940c, with no silly clashes. It is able to print standard quality prints at a speed that feels fierce compared to my older, smaller HP, without seeming to impair the performance of the PC as the HP does.
You get the impression Epson have really worked on the software to address such issues. The Claria ink for the Epson 1400 ink certainly seems to live up to the scuff-proof/smudge proof claim, but I haven’t tried running it under the tap yet. The main downsides at the moment are the price and availability of the original T0791 ink. Epson don’t seem to offer the much vaunted multipack, and you can’t get singles or multipack on the high street. Internet-ink has most of the cartridges in stock, unlike Epson who have two of the six cartridges out of stock. The 1400 printer is capable of producing large images quickly, you soon gulp down a lot of the 1400 printer ink (I used my first set in five days – without really trying).
I have had this Epson 1400 printer for quite a while and get excellent prints from smallest to A3+. Having calibrated my monitor the colour I get on the print matches the colour I see on the monitor. Only bind I have is that now and then it will not print and paper just is rejected and runs through machine. In fact I have had this with all my Epson printers but apart from that they are great machines.
